Values

We all need direction in life, whether we are therapists, counselors or clients.ethics values

We can often get our direction from our values, ethics or other inner value systems.

But these systems can often be muddled up, unclear and in conflict.

Yet, some things really are more important to us than other things.

So how do we decide our own personal benchmark?

What is right for us?

What is unacceptable for us?

What are our own personal standards in life?

What is the direction that we would like our life to go in?

The following simple exercise takes little time to do and can transform and simplify your understanding of your own values and ethics, giving your life a simpler, clearer and hopefully more fulfilling direction.

  1. Go to this website by clicking here and download the values cards.
  2. Cut them out and shuffle through them putting them into two piles, “Very Important” and “Not important”.
  3. Do this until all of the cards have been put into a one pile or the other.  Move the not important pile to one side.
  4. Spread out the “Very Important” cards and from those, select ten only.
  5. This is not a large number, but they will give you a much clearer idea of what is really important to you.
  6. From theses ten cards, now pick each one up and think of one thing that you can do to take you towards that value.
It does not have to be a big thing.  Just a thing.
